70 Children Get Planting with the Barbican Horticultural Society

The Veggery may have now been dismantled, but it certainly went out on a high! Before it was packed up, the Barbican Horticultural Society (BHS) gave 70 young visitors the chance to get their hands dirty at a special Children’s Planting Activity during the Barbican Summer Party on 12 September.

With an enthusiastic queue of budding gardeners, BHS members Myra, Sue and Helen were kept busy helping children choose their favourite plant, pot it up and create their very own miniature garden to take home.

Thanks to funding from Culture Mile BID, there was plenty of choice, with colourful pansies, cheerful kalanchoes and a selection of succulents on offer. The BHS also supplied everything the young gardeners needed, including pots, compost, grit and moss, so they could get straight down to the serious business of planting!

There was plenty of enthusiasm and creativity on display, with many of the children proudly making their own plant labels before heading home with their new green companions.

We hope this is just the beginning of many new gardening adventures. Our young growers have been invited to send us photos showing how their plants are getting on — so keep an eye out for updates from our newest generation of gardeners!
