The Walled Garden, Brockwell Park

Hidden away in the centre of Brockwell Park is a beautiful walled garden, with community greenhouses next door. It dates from the early nineteenth century, when it was originally the kitchen garden for John Blades' Brockwell Hall estate.

What is there

The estate became a public park in 1891, and the kitchen garden was re-imagined as an 'Old English' Walled Garden with pergolas, arbors, a fountain, a sundial, herbaceous borders and beds.

The garden is filled with colour and shaded by magnolia, flowering cherry and mulberry trees, with inspired planting tended by one gardener and a handful of volunteers.

There is a cafe at Brockwell Hall in the park.

Suggested method of travel from the Barbican

Thameslink train from Farringdon to Herne Hill takes 15 minutes. Then a short walk across the road into the park and up a hill to find the Walled Garden.
