19 acres of gardens and a striking art deco mansion. Once a medieval palace and Tudor royal residence, in the 1930s Eltham Palace was transformed by eccentric millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. The Courtaulds' home gives a glimpse of their extravagant lifestyle with beautiful 1930s interiors and a magnificent medieval great hall.
The gardens include some stunning herbaceous borders, formal rose gardens and a rock garden, with pools and cascades running down to a moat.
Has a café for drinks, light bites and lunches.
Admission and cost
Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am - 4pm (March onwards), more limited opening days in the winter
Adult admission £12.50 (2025) with various concessions available
English Heritage and associated organisations (e.g. Art Pass) get free or reduced admission
Suggested method of travel from the Barbican
Overground London Bridge to Mottingham (20 mins), then 10 minute walk; AND/OR
125 or 161 buses (stops nearby)
